Support Arizona Association for the Deaf (AzAD) and attend their exciting 4th of July event! Appetizers and drinks will be served. Grab the opportunity to mingle with local deaf and hard of hearing people and enjoy the fireworks among the beautiful Arizona scenery from a rooftop patio! This event is off site — free transportation to and from the event is provided, thanks to ASDB.

The Opening Ceremony of the 53rd Biennial NAD Conference will take place on Tuesday, July 5th, 2016 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Immerse in local southwest deaf culture as we kick off the week! 

» OGG Breakfast  Wednesday morning, July 6, 2016

Wake up to a great filling meal and an energizing speaker! So, what’s an OGG? People who have been NAD members for three or more consecutive years are recognized as part of the Order of Georges and Georgettes (OGG). Traditionally, OGG Breakfast attendees choose a delegate to represent loyal NAD members at the Council of Representatives (COR) Meeting but OGG delegates will be chosen via online election. 

» Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Deaf Equality Luncheon — Wednesday, July 6, 2016

The NAD’s LGBT section committee plans an inspiring luncheon presentation with an award to be presented to a staunch advocate for LGBT rights. This luncheon incudes a great meal for members and supporters of the LGBT community as they unite on issues of this minority group. The NAD encourages its membership to support advocacy efforts toward equal rights of the deaf and hard of hearing LGBT population.

» Community Forum — Wednesday, July 6, 2016

The NAD Community Forum is an opportunity to actively share and collaborate. Together we will explore our roots and new ways we can interface as a community. Come get involved and work to promote the Deaf community as we embrace our present and future.  This is a wonderful interactive forum hosted along with community leaders and performers.  Thought-provoking topics such as Deaf Heart, collaboration and activism will be discussed in small groups, with facilitators, to create a safe open environment. Community members will learn strategies for having sensitive and productive conversations. Attendees will leave the Community Forum feeling inspired to make real change; being equipped with a deeper understanding of core and current issues in the Deaf Community, effective communication skills, and tangible action items. 

» College Bowl Preliminaries — Wednesday, July 6, 2016

The College Bowl, a Biennial NAD Conference tradition, begins with the preliminary competitions on Wednesday, July 6th. The Preliminary competition determines which colleges/Universities will compete in the College Bowl Final. Come cheer on your favorite schools as their brains are put to the test – and find out they were triumphantly correct or horribly wrong. Either way we will enjoy the moment, test our own knowledge, and there’s always the next question! 

» Gallaudet Alumni Breakfast — Thursday morning, July 7, 2016

This breakfast gathering, sponsored by Gallaudet University, is a great opportunity for Gallaudet alumnus and future students to gather with new and old friends, catch up on news from Gallaudet, and get ready for a very busy day.

Let’s meet up at the Youth Luncheon with your new and old friends to enjoy a great meal. This is a wonderful event for networking with leaders of the Deaf and Hard of hearing community to celebrate our deaf and hard of hearing youth! Youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also the partners of today.  The Youth Section has a great interactive presentation lined up to keep you entertained! Join this luncheon to support the NAD youth participants who is essential to the success of NAD organization and affiliates today and tomorrow!

» College Bowl Finals — Thursday, July 7, 2016

Come cheer for your favorite team in a battle of knowledge and wit on Thursday evening. A Biennial NAD Conference tradition since 1988, the College Bowl brings together young, quick thinking deaf and hard of hearing college students for a spirited evening of academic competition. Teams vie for the coveted silver trophy and scholarships as the audience tries to guess the answers! The expanded format may bring new colleges and Universities to the finals, will the winner continue to be one of the legacy teams, Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology, California State University at Northridge, or a surprising up-and-coming college or University?

This luncheon is a great opportunity for seniors to gather with new and old friends, catch up on news, and relax together. A biennial favorite of the NAD’s Senior Section, this event includes a luncheon, great camaraderie, and an interactive program for everyone!

Close out the wonderful conference week in Phoenix with the second biannual Youth Ambassador Program (YAP) Competition that will take place on July 8, 2016! A new modern program, the Youth Ambassador will showcase young deaf and hard of hearing female and male Americans who vie to become the NAD youth ambassadors.  This is a family-friendly event, go ahead and bring your children! This is a great way to celebrate deaf and hard of hearing youth, as they are the leaders of our tomorrow!

Family Day has many entertaining family-friendly activities in store for you! In collaboration with local Arizona and nation-wide deaf and hard of hearing organizations, there will be storytelling, performances, and entertaining presentations… all in ASL! This is a wonderful event to take your family to watch and to immerse in!
